In this lecture, Professor Litvak, the Leffell Chair in Modern Jewish History at Clark University (Worcester, MA), looks at the artist's myth of Jewish origins, reflected in his well-known romance with his native city of Vitebsk. Returning to the best-known images of his Russian-Jewish "honeymoon" and uncovering a number of surprising and lesser-known works from his formative Russian years, Professor Litvak will examine Chagall's Jewish connections from the perspective of Russian-Jewish cultural history in the turbulent period of the Russian Revolution.
