The Mariinsky Theatre can trace its origins back to 1783, when Catherine the Great issued a decree that led to its formation. It has staged the premieres of operas by Verdi, Borodin, Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky as well as many of the great Russian ballets including Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, La Bayadère and Swan Lake.
Under the leadership of Valery Gergiev, its international reputation has grown through frequent touring and recordings.
“Gergiev masterfully illuminated the full richness of the instrumental writing. … The orchestra sounded spectacular.” — The Wall Street Journal “
…[S]ome of the most refined orchestral playing I have ever heard in the opera house. The performance, directed with great elegance and suppleness by conductor Valery Gergiev, was astounding. For the connoisseur of orchestral playing, this was an unforgettable experience” — The Glasgow Herald
